Position Description
The Fitness Supervisor is responsible for directly overseeing all day-to-day business operations of the Fitness Centers. The Fitness Supervisor directs sales, memberships and programs, works with employees to implement systems and procedures to capitalize and maximize membership sales. This position trains and educates employees on sales techniques, guest services practices and standards. The Fitness Supervisor requires an active and participative management approach and an overall working knowledge of all aspects of Fitness Center operations. The Fitness Supervisor is responsible for supervising and staffing both the Randall Oaks and Rakow Fitness Centers. The Fitness Supervisor directs the on-going implementation of the annual budget, sales and service programs. The Fitness Supervisor is responsible for supervising and implementing all wellness programs. The Fitness Supervisor is under the direct supervision of the Randall Oaks Recreation Center Facility Supervisor and is granted the opportunities for independent supervision in related areas of responsibility.
Essential Responsibilities
- Directs sales, memberships and programs to achieve or exceed budget.
- Operates the Fitness Centers and its guest service components in accordance within the approved budget.
- Ensures the safety of the facility through Employee in-service trainings and maintaining proper certifications for all Employees.
- Maintain and control fitness inventory.
- Interacts with members to discover and field concerns and/or suggestions.
- Responsible for the upkeep, general appearance and preventative maintenance of all equipment and properties of the Fitness Centers.
- Oversees membership, Personal Training and wellness programs – both internal and external.
- Develop monthly Fitness Center newsletter and quarterly seasonal brochure.
- Work with the Membership Coordinator to develop, implement and execute a Corporate membership revenue stream.
- Work with the Marketing Department to develop flyers and promotional items for all fitness center specials.
- Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, terminates, schedules and evaluates all employees for programs and operations.
- Works with Facility Supervisors to ensure appropriate staffing for all events.
- Prepares monthly program evaluations, monthly and annual fitness reports, and any special reports requested by the RORC Facility Supervisor.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of existing programs and submits recommendations for program development, changes and pricing structure to the RORC Facility Supervisor.
- Maintains records of programs, fees, class participation and membership statistics as required.
- Develops general knowledge of Park District programs to respond to specific questions or direct guests to the appropriate staff member.
- Performs the job safely and in compliance with Park District policies, procedures, work and safety rules.
- Utilizes district’s computer software and systems applicable to area.
- Researches current trends and develops new programs in response to the community’s needs and desires.
- Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with affiliated groups and community organizations.
- Ensures goals are being met within area of responsibility as well as being a productive team member to achieve department goals.
- Responsible for monthly submissions for fitness member reimbursement through the Renew Active and Silver Sneakers insurance programs.
- Organize and execute our annual Winter Frozen Oaks 5K event at the Randall Oaks Golf Course.
- Responsible as main PDRMA contact as District Wellness Coordinator.
- Responsible as main NISRA contact for our Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies programming.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position will supervise all Fitness Department which includes: one Membership Coordinator, one Group Exercise Coordinator, one Assistant Fitness Supervisor, approximately 10 Personal Trainers, approximately 30 Fitness Attendants and approximately 30 Group Exercise Instructors.
Marginal Functions/Responsibilities
- Assist at Special Events, as needed.
- Assist with capital budget research and recommendations.
- Attend professional conferences, workshops, and seminars to stay current in the field of expertise.
- Serve on internal committees as assigned.
- Assist the Randall Oaks Recreation Center Facility Supervisor with duties, as needed.
- Other non-essential duties as assigned.
Communication & Customer Service
- Develops and maintains positive and effective working relationship with co-workers and to promote and maintain high morale and enthusiasm.
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Communicates matters of importance in a timely manner.
- Makes recommendations to management for improvements and efficiencies.
- Employee represents the Dundee Township Park District in a professional manner.
Safety & Risk Management
- Maintains a working knowledge of all general and departmental-specific safety rules.
- Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and/or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.
- Reports any work-related injuries to supervisor promptly.
- Immediately reports all accidents and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
- Attends all required safety program and in-service education meetings.
- Corrects unsafe conditions, if possible, alerts co-workers to potential unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
- Instructs co-workers, when necessary, on safety procedures or precautions.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Parks & Recreation, Kinesiology or related field.
- Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience in Fitness Department management.
- Certified in First Aid/AED/CPR or ability to obtain certification within 3 months.
- Proficient with RecTrac 3.1 and Microsoft Office products.
- Knowledge of fitness equipment.
- Knowledge of health and fitness.
- Must have project management, organization and time management skills
- High attention to detail and proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Good physical condition, sufficient strength, and mobility required.
- Physical ability to demonstrate proper equipment usage.
- Mechanical aptitude required, including the use of tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Knowledge and skills in technology, or the ability to learn.
- Ability to learn additional software and systems required for business transactions.
- Reading, writing, speaking and understanding English language.
- Possess good problem solving skills and has capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations.
- Ability to work a varied schedule including some nights and weekends as required.
- Ability to pay meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to execute the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Highly organized with excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Hours Standards
The Fitness Supervisor works approximately 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend and weekday evening hours. The RORC Facility Supervisor may require this employee to exceed 40 hours of work in certain situations.
Monday through Friday, Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hours may be adjusted as needed.
