This position is part of the Lyndon Economic opportunity AmeriCorps Program (LEAP). LEAP is a national service program that places AmeriCorps members with non-profit organizations throughout the Northeast Kingdom (NEK) of Vermont to support those organizations in expanding their services that many communities rely on. LEAP members deliver direct service to local youth in the form of PreK-12 STEM educational programming. LEAP supports members in their path to educational and career attainment through direct service, on-going trainings, and professional development opportunities offered during the service year. Upward Bound at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon is committed to providing modest-income first generation college bound students the academic background, college preparatory experiences and support needed to succeed in college immediately after high school. Our program serves seventy five area high school students from the Northeast Kingdom who are required to meet one of the two following criteria: they will be the first in their family to graduate from college, or they are from a low to moderate income family. Two thirds of our students must meet both of these requirements. Upward Bound students spend six weeks of their summer on the campus of NVU-Lyndon. Our students have four hours of college preparatory course work during the mornings, three hours of volunteer service in our community each afternoon, and spend evenings engaged in a variety of activities designed to expand their educational opportunities and promote cultural and inter-personal growth to further prepare them for post-secondary education.
Member Duties : The member will help NVU-L Upward Bound students navigate the complexities of college aspirations, applications, and enrollment. -Assist faculty in core academic courses including those in the STEM fields -Lead instruction for elective courses -Hold regular suite meetings to administer program expectations and prevent disciplinary issues -Through an immersive 6 week program promote college aspirations through direct contact with students -Support the directors with programming and generate relationship building between Upward Bound students and current college graduates/students to encourage the normalization of college graduation for the Upward Bound Cohort -Support the directors in preparatory planning for the residential program and first week excursion to ensure all aspects of the summer program run smoothly. -Assist Upward Bound Director and Assistant Director with updating and organizing student participant information lists and forms as part of data collection
