POSITION SUMMARY:
The Manager of Regulatory Accounting manages the regulatory accounting team and is responsible for the financial data to support all monthly and annual regulatory filings for the utility companies at Summit Utilities, Inc. This role will ensure the proper coding of transactions according to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (“FERC”) uniform system of accounts (“USOA”) and compliance with all FERC requirements.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the proper recording of utility company accounting transactions per FERC USOA guidelines
- Oversee staff of direct reports ensuring that all functions are completed in accordance with the Company’s policies and applicable laws
- Review and validate data prepared by the Regulatory Accounting team to be used in regulatory filings, including monthly and annual reports and rate case filings
- Ensure compliance with all FERC accounting requirements, guidance, policies, procedures and applicable laws
- Partner with the Regulatory Affairs and Regulatory Finance & Rates departments to support company initiatives for regulatory processes and rate setting
- Provide testimony as needed for regulatory filings
- Manage the cost assignment and allocation manuals for each utility company, ensuring any changes in process are updated timely and communicated to Regulatory teams and each state commission
- Lead training of accounting staff on the correct application of FERC accounting classifications and guidelines to ensure compliance with the USOA and all other FERC rules and regulations.
- Complies with federal, state and local legal requirements by staying current with existing and new legislation, anticipating future legislation and advising senior management on needed actions
- Train and mentor team members, embracing Summit’s culture of servant leadership
- Support the implementation of financial and ancillary software systems
- Support annual audit process for timely issuance of audit financials in accordance with established company timelines
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
- Advanced degree desirable
- CPA desirable
- 8 years of progressively responsible experience in a similar role
- Extensive use of Excel spreadsheets
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Knowledgeable and experienced in the administrative aspects of management in a corporation including assisting in setting and communicating goals, delegating, providing feedback to employees, handling employee issues, providing employee recognition.
- Strong knowledge of finance and accounting, principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requirements.
- Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a remote environment, including managing remote team members.
- Ability to motivate staff to produce quality materials within tight timeframes while managing several projects.
