About You
You are an experienced upper school teacher (Grades 9-12) who seeks to advance the critical reading, thinking, and writing skills of your students by guiding their analysis of diverse literary works and essay writings. Being a highly energetic and productive self-starter, you have excellent organizational and relationship building skills, are adept at guiding students in the classroom, and support their extracurricular pursuits. You enjoy the rhythm and energy of an independent day school and demonstrate integrity, humor, and sound judgment in everything you do.

To be successful in this role, you must be able to:
Maintain a full-time academic course load teaching four sections of upper school English
Instruct upper school students in the mastery of reading, writing, speaking, critical thinking, and literary analysis
Create and present lesson plans that effectively align with core competencies and School standards
Engage students in classroom discussions and activities that promote mindful independent and collaborative problem-solving skills
Develop assignments and homework through which subject area growth and proficiency are measured and prompt feedback is provided to students
Issue progress reports and timely updates consistent with School policies and standards, including quarterly report cards and parent-teacher conferences
Manage classroom and maintain an environment that ensures students demonstrate appropriate behavior, manners, study habits, and academic progress
Prepare students for standardized testing, including post-secondary entry exams
Provide timely and effective feedback to students, parents, faculty, and administration regarding student progress, needs, and concerns (academic, social, emotional)
Research curriculum and instruction opportunities; develop activities to enhance educational experiences
Work collaboratively with colleagues across divisions and departments
Fully engage in School-sponsored professional development programs and department meetings
Remain knowledgeable of instructional and curriculum trends, goals, and objectives
Coach and/or advise at least two extracurricular sports, clubs, or activities
Actively support an inclusive school community based on cultural competence, diverse identities and perspectives, and respect for all voices
Perform other duties, as assigned

Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in English, education or related field; advanced degree in subject matter highly preferred
At least three years of classroom experience teaching upper school students, including remote teaching
Ability to plan, organize, develop, and conduct comprehensive lesson plans and instruction
Demonstrated knowledge in teaching principles, theories, methods, behavior management techniques, and conflict resolution strategies
Ability to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) and possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
Understanding of the unique academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of upper school students
Ability to plan, organize, develop, and conduct comprehensive lesson plans and instruction
Ability to create and contribute to an engaging and inclusive learning environment and workplace
History of continued education or professional development
Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities and assignments
