ABOUT THE POSITION
GIS Analyst Lead, Mid-Atlantic Region | Washington, DC , Tysons Corner, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Raleigh, or Charlotte

In this position you will serve as a Geographic Information System (GIS) thought leader and will lead a team that designs, creates, and implements complex spatial databases and helps software engineers (and other staff) understand spatial data and analysis in support of creating and maintaining end-user applications. The selected individual will also conduct highly complex analyses of spatial data and produce maps that express the results of analytical processes using the Esri Suite of ArcGIS software. This position coordinates the procurement and distribution of spatial data and prepares project plans, manages vendors and/or subconsultants, and coordinates internal team members in the completion of projects.
Responsibilities
- Performs highly complex analysis of spatial data using GIS technology (e.g., buffering, spatial overlays, distance calculations).
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots issues arising from the use of GIS software and spatial data
- Researches and corrects highly complex problems using logic for spatial and data analyses.
- Oversees and performs quality checks on techniques and processes for data searches, retrievals, and extracting / organizing data.
- Oversees the research of source documents to resolve missing or conflicting data.
- Understand the techniques and processes for converting GIS data to and from CAD software format and converting survey data to GIS format using coordinate geometry
- Manages and leads highly complex GIS projects.
- Defines and oversees the process to create and manage online tools using spatial data.
- Works with a database administrator to develop the techniques, designs, and processes to manage spatial data on complex GIS projects.
- Reviews work products of other technical colleagues.
- Directs and monitors work of less experienced GIS team members. Provides direction and support to ensure departmental effectiveness and efficiency.
- Orients, trains, and directly supervises technical team members.
- Participates in professional and personal development aligned with career goals.
- Performs all job functions in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and VHB policies and procedures.
Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of the principles of geographic information science and GIS technology.
- Robust skill in the use of GIS software, particularly the Esri ArcGIS platform.
- Ability to develop and maintain online spatial data tools for non-GIS users.
- Extensive skill in applying GIS technology to solve difficult analytical problems.
- Extensive knowledge of relational database management systems and the ability to use the SQL language.
- Advanced knowledge of Global Positioning System technology and ability to plan the use of GPS technology for data collection.
- Ability to define and oversee the process to automate repetitive tasks using Python.
- Ability to define the process and oversee the process for using data transformation software to import and export data for use by the engineering team.
- Excellent leadership skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Team oriented with ability to perform multiple tasks independently in a timely manner and collaborate effectively and positively with coworkers.
- Self-motivated, highly organized, and detail oriented.
- Skills and knowledge must be commensurate with required experience and job level
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in the use of GIS technology
- BS in GIS, Engineering, Planning or Geography or related discipline (a master’s degree may be substituted for 2 years of experience)
- GISP certification
- Relationship with Mid-Atlantic-area clients such as DDOT, VDOT, NCDOT, RDU, BWI, CATS, GoTriangle, WMATA and other state and local government clients in the area is highly desirable
