Monday through Friday schedule with occasional weekend and evening hours
Groundwork Somerville is expanding its team with the addition of a new Climate Safe Neighborhood (CSN) and Community Engagement Director role. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the CSN and Community Engagement Director will serve as a thought partner and collaborator to the Program Director, the Farm Managers and the Youth Program Manager, and will work with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop and advance strategic climate plans and policies. Primarily focused on external affairs and volunteer coordination, the CSN and Community Engagement Director will be highly visible across the organization and within the community, building relationships with individual and corporate volunteers and serving on various city and nonprofit committees and stakeholder groups. This role is a tremendous opportunity for someone passionate about social, environmental, racial and climate justice.
CSN and Community Engagement Director Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required (i.e., City Planning, Public Policy, Social Work)
- Multilingual ability preferred but not required
- Three years of professional management experience
- Dynamic interpersonal skills with demonstrated success as an inspirational manager
- Prior experience leading advocacy work, including relationship development with a wide range of constituents, including community leaders, government, and elected officials
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational, detail, and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated skill and experience in problem-solving in organizational settings
- Ability to use a variety of technological tools and platforms

CSN and Community Engagement Director Job Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Executive Director to develop grant and philanthropic funding strategies
- Develop and maintain knowledge and expertise of the environmental and social justice conditions in the communities served by Groundwork, including climate safety, Urban Farming, open space and park access, affordable and renewable energy, and clean mobility access.
- Support staff in design, implementation and evaluation of community engagement and outreach strategies and programs
- Recruit and train project and program champions, including funders and government leaders
- Work closely with community and coalition members, stakeholder groups, and volunteers to communicate community-driven climate needs and solutions to government leaders and funders in support of required investments and policy change
- Empower residents, faith leaders, educators, businesses, and community-based organizations and Groundwork program leads to design neighborhood-scale community benefit programs
- Build strong, collaborative working relationships with external coalitions and stakeholders
- Represent Groundwork Sommerville communities at public forums/before governing bodies
- Attend and participate in public community meetings
- Develop effective communications to support community engagement and outreach efforts
- Serve as the point of contact for volunteers; work with program leads to recruit and match volunteers and communicate needs
- Responsible for all reporting required for the CSN project
- Assist with creating fact sheets, briefings, and reports to advance climate justice policy and community voice
- Generate climate-related content for social media and newsletter
- Participate in weekly staff meetings
